Role Summary:
Internship opportunities help students to gain valuable hands-on experience and get a critical jump start on a career in industrial research. Our assignments are generally for 10-12 weeks over the summer.

Essential Responsibilities:

At GE Global Research, scientists, engineers, and technicians work to provide GE's businesses and strategic partners with technical innovations for their future generation products, processes and services. Internship opportunities help students to gain valuable hands-on experience and get a critical jump start on a career in industrial research. Our assignments are generally for 10-12 weeks over the summer. Students will work side by side with experts in the field, completing challenging technical projects, applying their theoretical knowledge to real-life technical problems and developing skills in a cutting edge global environment. The program also includes seminars on cross-center technology and soft skills development. Opportunities for networking and showcasing project accomplishments are offered.


The following technical domains have Internships available:


Functional Materials


Seeking students specializing in the areas of Functional Materials to conduct research on dielectric materials, insulation systems and energy storage as applied to industrial challenges across aviation, additive manufacturing, energy, healthcare and transportations domains.


Metals


Seeking students specializing in the areas of Coatings, Metallurgy and Ceramic Processing. The interns will conduct research on additive materials processing, new high temperature coating technologies and/or new materials processing techniques for high temperature applications in our aviation and power businesses.


Aerothermal


Seeking students specializing in the areas of heat transfer, aerodynamics, and fluid mechanics. The interns will conduct research on aero and thermal technologies as applied to industrial challenges across GE’s products in jet engines, industrial gas turbines, renewable energy, healthcare systems, and locomotives.


Combustion


Seeking students specializing in the areas of combustion and fuels. The interns will conduct research in our high-pressure combustion laboratory to advance low-emissions gas turbine technology.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program pursuing a degree in Physics, Material Science or Ceramic Engineering, Metallurgy or Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace or related degree in an accredited college or university.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS :


  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Must be 18 years or older

    Desired Characteristics:

    Aerothermal Technical Domain desired qualifications:


  • Demonstrated experience and strong skills in at least one of the following areas – heat transfer, aerodynamics, or fluid mechanics
  • Experience with experimental practices, methods, and uncertainty quantification pretraining to heat transfer or fluid dynamics
  • Skills in the area of computational fluid dynamics, preferably in turbomachinery applications
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling, preferably with NX
  • Experience with MATLAB or other languages for manipulating and reducing data
  • Familiarity with thermal modeling using Ansys Workbench


    Dielectric Materials & Insulation Systems [Functional Materials] desired qualifications:


  • Training in materials science, dielectric materials & components and electrical system, preferably combined
  • Instrumentation skills in high voltage testing and dielectrics measurement, including dielectric spectroscopy, impedance spectroscopy, voltage endurance, dielectric breakdown & polarization techniques
  • Knowledge of high voltage engineering and electrical insulation coordination
  • Skilled in Multi-physics modeling and simulation software (COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB)


    Energy Storage / Batteries [Functional Materials] desired qualifications:


  • Strong background in electrochemistry, materials science and/or chemistry, as well as hands-on experience in battery assembly and performance characterization
  • Desire to work in lab to prepare / formulate electrodes and separator and follow up with test cell fabrication
  • Ability to perform a suite of cell performance tests, including automated cell cycling, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • Ability to perform post-mortem tear-down and analysis/characterization of cell materials to investigate degradation mechanisms
  • Sharp analytical skills to evaluate relationships between performance data and experiment design factors
