Role Summary: The Senior Scientist will be responsible for supporting the development and characterization of polymer membrane for filtration technology intended for use in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. They will design and execute studies to optimize membrane chemistry and performance. In addition, they will provide technical expertise for membrane manufacturing process development initiatives and problem-solving for existing products and processes.
Essential Responsibilities: • Conduct research and development in the field of membrane fabrication and characterization. • Design, implement, and analyze experiments for the characterization of liquid transport properties of membranes. • Design and conduct experiments and engineering studies to broaden the fundamental understanding of fiber membrane production and processes. • Experience in the following areas: membrane permeability and selectivity studies, pore size distribution determination, and imaging techniques (e.g. SEM, TEM). • Expertise with polymer chemistry, polymer extrusion (membrane fabrication), and surface modification/ functionalization • Develop analytical methods for in-process and/or finished product testing. • Participate in cross-functional teams on new product development and manufacturing problem-solving efforts. • Enhance organizational knowledge related to membrane projects by continuous assessment of current literature. • Contribute to the generation of ideas and potential inventions to be used in new products. • Prepare application notes, reports, publications, and presentations • Actively participate in site EHS program
Quality Specific Goals: 1. Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position 2. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines 3. Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns and take immediate corrective action as required 4. Support compliance/closure of Regulatory and Quality requirements before completing Design Outputs/Program Deliverables 5. Participate in continuous improvement activities by identifying and appropriately escalating process and product quality gaps, providing solutions when possible
Qualifications/Requirements: 1. A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering or related field with emphasis in Membrane Science and Technology. 2. 2 – 5 years’ related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent directly related work experience. 3. Competency with cross-functional team work and professional interactions with customers in the biopharmaceutical industry. 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 5. Strong computer skills, understanding of the scientific process, as well as, analytical instrumentation and theory skills
Desired Characteristics: 1. MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, or related field. 2. Expertise with hollow fiber membrane technology 3. Demonstrated record of innovation in the area of scientific expertise. 4. Experienced working in a cross-functional, global team environment.
